Track Racing
Bikes are capable of reaching high speeds whilst at the same time allowing someone to get plenty of exercise and plenty of fun out of it. Therefore, seeing as we’re talking about something with wheels, it is only natural that someone would decide that people need to race each other with them; taking on competitors and reaching high speeds along designated courses.
Enter Track Racing; possibly the most intense and exciting of all of the sports related to the world of cycling. Depending on the type of track racing at hand, competitors (or sprinters as they are known) can reach high speeds in a matter of seconds. It shows that not only does one need to necessary skills to compete; they also need to necessary nerves.
This is not just because of the speed. Sprinters need nerves because a slip of the foot could lead to a serious injury. Whereas the bikes we ride for recreation can travel on momentum, with the pedals staying any position as the wheels continue to roll, track racing bikes have a fixed wheel, which means that one has no choice but to carry on pedalling continuously. It means that someone must have stamina as well, with legs strong enough to continue to the end and preferably in the first position. That’s not to say it is dangerous though, as competitors learn to adapt to this style rather quickly.
But what about the specifics? The tracks themselves are usually specially built in an oval shape with the two corners at either end containing a heavy bank, with the bits in between being straight.
Bikes are divided into two types, with their designs related to their performance. Low profile bikes are designed to be more aerodynamic, allowing the sprinter to reach faster speeds more efficiently. They are often used in time trial circumstances. The alternative bikes are so designed as to handle well when other sprinters are on the track racing against you.
And like many sports, it is one that it easy to join in. Even those who do not own a bike can get in on the action, with tracks existing that supply their own bikes and if people are concerned about the fixed wheel they can be safe in the knowledge that most master it quickly. It will undoubtedly make riding freewheel bikes a whole different experience.
Track Racing is an enjoyable sport to watch and take part in, so look out for it at the next Olympics.
